Question
I'm having problems in this relative motion problem because I don't understand how to incorporate the 20 degrees and 300m/s into the 25 m/s velocity of the car.A car with a machine gunner is travelling 25 m/s. The machine gunner shots a bullet with a velocity of 300m/s at an angle of 20 degrees in respect to the horizontal plane. Neglecting air resistance and height of the car, how far does the bullet travel in respect to the ground if it is fired from and lands on level ground?
Explanation / Answer
For calculating the distance travelled with respect to ground, consider the velocity of bullet with respect to ground => v(x) = 300 cos(20) v(y) = 300 sin(20) now, t = time of flight = 2*v(y)/g = 2*300*sin(20) / 9.8 = 20.94 sec => Horizontal distance = v(x) * t = 300 *cos(20) * 20.94 = 5903.15 mts = 5.9 kms
