Question
11) Consider a planet orbiting a nearby star. The intensity of electromagnetic radiation on the surface of the planet is 2.80 x 10^3 watts/meter^2. Determine the value of Erms.>the answer is 1.03 x 10^3 V/m, why???
14) A laser beam (propagating through air) is incident on a glass plate. The glass has an index of refraction of 1.50. The angle of incidence is 37 degree. Part of the beam is reflected and part of the beam is transmitted through the glass. Calculate the angle between the incident beam and the reflected beam.
the answer is 74 degree, why??
Explanation / Answer
a) We know that
Erms = [ c o I ]
= [ 3 x 108 x 4 x 10-7 x 2.80 x 103]
= 1.027 x 103 V/m
b)Given that
n1 = 1.50 (glass)
1 = 37 deg
n2 = 1.00 (air)
n1 sin1 = n2 sin2
==> sin2 = n1 sin1 / n2
= 1.50 x sin37 / 1.00
==> 2 = 64.51 deg
