Genetic traits are the obsevable traits of an individual like height,eye color etc. the reason for the deaths of the finches found under cactus plant was due to starvation at night. the total percentage of the birds died was 50 percent.It was because there was no rain for 10 months and the food supply was very low and also there was interaction over food.These factors might be responsible for causing the death of the birds. In 1977, there was no rain for 550 days. The size of the beak was 8.6 to crack the seeds and not the smaller beak one. Natural selection operates under stressful conditions. When Grants returned in 1978, Yes the grandchildren's beak were found different from their grand parents as the beaks were found to be 3 to 4 percent deeper than the grandparents. Yes the evolution took place because of the change in climatic conditons from the large beak birds to the small finches. No evoution does not take centuries to occur as it can occur in 1 to 2 years ,period of months.
