Question

Explain in detail how you would determine (using tools in the lab, and without using the formula):

the wavelength of the vibrations
the tension in the string
the linear mass density of the string

(The experiment consists of a tuning fork mounted to the lab bench, which vibrates a horizontal string that can be draped over a pulley and loaded with mass. The equation describing standing waves, where f is the linear frequency of oscillation, is the wavelength of the vibrations, T is the tension in the string, and is the linear mass density of the string. )

Explanation / Answer

We could apply a given Tension to the string and a given freq of vibration. We can easilty measure the velocity of the wave. Then we can use v=n*wavelength :) Another more practical way is that we set the tension so that 'n' (n is your choice,if string length is large, take n=3,4 or 5;else take n=1,2 or 3) loops standing wave. Then the length of string is given by l (l is known/can be measured) = n*wavelength/2 Hope you got it :)
