Question

A large piece of very cold ice is put in a container and constant heat is applied to the container. The heat is applied slowly and uniformly to ensure that all the material in the container is always at a thermal equilibrium (the temperature inside the container is always uniform). Shown below is a sketch of the temperature change as a function of time as the ice is heated, goes through phase transitions, and eventually is turned into hot water vapor. Based on how the temperature changes as a function of time, the graph is divided into five regions as shown in the figure above. In region B and region D, the temperature does not change for some time period. Choose ALL that are correct from the following. In region C, there is water and no ice, and the water temperature rises as it is boiling. In region A, there is a mixture of ice and water, and the temperature of the mixture rises as the ice is melting. In region E, there is water and no ice, and the water temperature rises as water is boiling. In region D, there is water and no ice, and the water is boiling. In region B, there is ice and no water, and the temperature of the ice is always at 0 degree C. In region C, there is water and no ice.

Explanation / Answer

Statement 1 is incorrect because,
In region A , the ice absorbs heat till its melting point and hence temperature rises. then In region B , it takes heat for melting, melts completely , and we get water t same temperature. Hence in region C , there is only water and no Ice and temperature rises, but water doesn't boil.

Statement 2 is incorrect because

Initially we begin with very old ice. hence in region A we have only ice and no water, and temperature rises because this ice is absorbing heat and is heating up.

Statement 3 is Incorrect because

In region E we have water vapour, no water , no ice. In region C we have water, which boils in region D and converts to water vapour and hence in region E we have only water vapour , which absorb heat and hence temperature rises.

Statement 4 is correct becuase

In region D , water is boiling a,d there is no ice, hence temperature mis constant.

Statement 5 is incorrect because

In region B , ice is melting and converting to water, hence there bis water and ice both present.

Statement 6 is correct because

In region A , the ice absorbs heat till its melting point and hence temperature rises. then In region B , it takes heat for melting, melts completely , and we get water t same temperature. Hence in region C , there is only water and no Ice and temperature rises.

Hence the correct statements are :

Statement 4 and statement 6 .
