Question
A wagon is coasting at a speed vA along a straight and level road. When 29.6% of the wagon's mass is thrown off the wagon, parallel to the ground and in the forward direction, the wagon is brought to a halt. If the direction in which this mass is thrown is exactly reversed, but the speed of this mass relative to the wagon remains the same, the wagon accelerates to a new speed vB. Calculate the ratio vB/vA.
I got 2.85 as an answer, but that is wrong. I'm not sure if I am setting the problem up correctly.
Explanation / Answer
by conservation of momentum 0.296m*va +0 = m*v -0.296m*va +0.784m*vb = m*v equating 0.296m*va +0 = -0.296m*va +0.784m*vb vb/vb = 37/49 = 0.7551
