Question
Suppose you are sleeping in your bedroom, and there is a fire. Smoke is pouring through the partially-open door. To keep smoke from coming in, you must throw something to close the door. The only option for closing the door is either to throw a blob of clay OR a superball (bouncy) at the door. Assume that the clay blob and a superball have the SAME mass, and that you throw them with the SAME velocity.
Which would you throw to close the door, the clay blob that will stick to the door or the superball that will bounce back from the door with almost the same speed as it had before it collided with the door? EXPLAIN your choice using concepts such as force, energy, momentum, or Newton's laws.
Which object undergoes the greater momentum change during the collision with the door-the clay blob (i.e. the inelastic collision) or the superball (i.e. the elastic collision)? Explain your reasoning carefully.
