Question

DIck and jane stand on a platform with a pulley system attached to the roof. the pulley consist of two wheels and its attached from the roof and platform. Dick weighs 500 N and Jane weighs 400 N. Jane is supporting some of her weight on the rope while dick is not in contact with the pulley system.

the question is, what is the downward force she is exerting on the platform?

How which forces do I take into consideration here? is it just the normal force and mg of only jane or is dick involved? how DO I take into account that jane is supporting her mg on the pulley system?

Explanation / Answer

The question would be clearer if u give the figure. but from what i observe, Jane should exert her own weight force ei. 400 N . Since Dick is not in contact with the rope you should not consider his weight. to account for the statement that jane is supporting her mg on the pulley system, the pulley pulls up jane with certain force through the rope , which makes it appear that jane should be exerting less force on the platform. but the fact is that the same rope pulls up the plateform (through the pulley system). the platform, in turn, pushes up jane(exerts on janes feet) with the same amount of force. so in the end it is her own weight that she is exerting on the platform.
