Question

The problem is:
An airboat glides across the surface of the water on a cushion of air. Perform the following calculations for a boat in which the mass of the boat is 450kg.
Part a)If there is no friction, how much force must the propeller fan exert on the air to accelerate the boat at 5.0m/s^2? I got the answer to this, which is 2200N; the information is needed for part b.
Part b) If the actual acceleration with the fan generating the force calculated in part a is only 4.95m/s^2, how much friction does the air cushion exert on the boat?

I’m confused on Part b, as far as what it’s asking and how to solve the question, please help!

Explanation / Answer

a) Prat a is straight forward and the answer to it is 450*5 = 2250N b) second part says that due to the friction the acc of the boat is 4.95 and not 5 so the friction is acting against the boat Force due to fan - force due to friction = ma => 2250 - friction = 450*4.95 => friction = 22.5N
