Question

A cart of mass Mc is being pulled by an object of mw.Assume friction is negligible. (values are not given for mc and mw, but the mass of mc is larger than mw)

A. how many forces are acting on the cart? What are these forces?

B. Two of the forces above cancel each other. What are these forces? How do you know that these two forces will be zero?

C. What are the forces acting on mw?

D. If the tension in the string is T, what is the total force of Fc acting on the cart parallel to the direction of motion, and what is the total force Fw acting on the hanging object parallel to the direction of its motion?

Fc=?

Fw=?

Explanation / Answer

A.) tensile force in the rope/cable pulling the cart ; weight of the cart;reaction force exerted on the cart
B.) the weight of the cart is cancelled by the reaction force from the ground.
C.)its weight ; reaction force from the ground ; tensile force on the connecting material.
D.) Fc = T & Fw = weight of the object - T i guess for the part D, the author has assumed a pulley string system in which the cart is on a table and the object is connected to it through a string running over a pulley attched to the edge of the table from the object hangs.
