Question

The condition influenca is caused by a virus that infects the epitheliam of the respiratory tract. The virus can cause tion of the airways, death of the epithellal cells, and excess secretion of mucus. Is influenza likely tructive disease pattern or a restrictive disease pattern? Predict the values you would expect to see 4 to show an obst on spirometry for a patient with influenza ffect is t A patient with influenza will have decreased pulmonary gas exchange occurring in the alveoli. What e likely to have on the pH of a patient's blood? Explain. 5 Leda presents after an episode of food poisoning that caused prolonged vomiting. You notice during the e that her respiratory rate is fairly low at eight breaths per minute. You run some lab tests and find that the p her blood is abnormally alkaline (basic), a condition called metabolic alkalosis. Are her respiratory rate and pH related? If so, how and why? does the ventilatory rate increase during exercise?

Explanation / Answer

4) Spirometry is a test that is done to know the condition of the lungs. So, spirometry gives us the idea of how much air is being inhaled and exhaled.Spirometry is generally done to know the breathing related diseases. Influenza is also known as Flu and influenza are of two types Influenza A and B. The symptoms of influenza are fever, sore throat, headache and cough. The various parameters to study the influenza effect are done by the doctor based on the age, height and weight of the patient. If a patient if effected with influenza he/she must be having the following values:

Forced Expiratory Volume(FEV1): Forced expiratory volume in one seconf

Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)

FEV1 to FVC Ratio: If this ratio is in adults if less than 70% and in children below 18 years is less than 85 % then the person is suffering from influenza.

5) The pH of a body is considered to be measure of alkalinity of a fluid. In human body pH acts a key indicator of balance within the body fluids like blood, urine and saliva. If a body is more alkaline than acidic then its likely to absorb more Oxygen from the environment. If the patient is affected from influenza then its blood will possess a low pH(less than 5) which is a alarming factor because her body will become to attract more diseases. Her body is more likely to be acidic if it has low pH value of blood.

6) Metabolic Alkalosis is a condition where the pH become elevated beyond the normal range and lead to incresed bicarbonate concentration. There comes a situation of Hypoventilation( Breathing at an abnormally slow rate). Hypokalemia is also present in such situations so patient experiences very low repiration. So if pH shows the value which indicates high basicity then we can confirm than it will cause very less repiration.

7) Whever a person is involved in exercise the heart starts speeding up for pumping extra oxygen for the blood. So person starts breathing heavily to acquire more Oxygen and to get rid of Carbon dioxide. This is the reason for increasing of ventilatory rate during exercise.
