Explanation / Answer

The process of breathing involves inhalation and exhalation of air through our nostrils. This is achieved by the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm muscle which causes the inwards and outwards movement of our ribs. This,in turn, helps to increase and decrease the volume of the chest cavity which results in air rushing into our lungs [inhalation] and then pushed out of our lungs [exhalation].

1. When the diaphragm muscle relaxes, it pulls the rib-cage inwards and downwards. This decreases the volume of the chest cavity and pressure is exerted on the lungs. As a result , CO2 rich air is pushed out of the lungs and goes out through the nostrils. This is exhalation.

2. In the second case, as the membrane flattens out and contracts, the intercostal muscles relax and the ribs move outwards and upwards. This increases the volume of the chest cavity and fresh, oxygen rich air enters the lungs through the nostrils. This is inhalation.
