Question

From a real life or hypothetical study (presented in lecture, discussion section, one you come up with on your own, or some combination) give a specific example of each steps of tree building below. (12pts) a. Collect taxa - which group are you working on? b. Collect data and code characters - what kind of data and how are they coded? c. Organize data in a character matrix - what is in the rows and what is in the columns? d. Build Trees - what method of tree building are you using? e. Evaluate Trees -how do we know we can be confident (or not) in the tree? f. Use tree as a framework to address questions in evolution - why did you do the study and what are you testing?

Explanation / Answer

I am working on sharks , amphibians, primates Data is stored in the form of characters (in a matrix) like, is shark is a vertebrate, presence of limbs. Single matrix keep more than characters. In rows different taxa are present and in in columns different characters are present. I am using neighbour joining method to build the tree. By using bootstrapping value we can check the confidence of tree. We are doing this study because we want to find the evolutionary relationship between the different taxa and we are testing is there any evolutionary relationship between different taxa using their characters.
