Question

Please answer 12, 13, and 14 with some reasoning added The Lipid Bilayer 363 Page 3 Regular multiple, choice. Circle the one best answer. (3 pts each) 12) You have isolated an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction XY. At 37 the rate of product formation is substantial. However at 4° almost no product is formed. You know that the enzyme is not denatured by the cold. Which of the following is true: a) The enzyme is capable of lowering the activation energy of the reaction at 37 but not b) atgo b) The enzyme is capable of lowering the activation energy of the reaction at both temperatures, but the rate of the reaction is still much lower at the 4° than at 37 c) The enzyme must be under negative feedback regulation at 4° but not at 37 d) The enzyme is capable of changing the delta G of the reaction at 370 but not at 4 13) You are studying a biochemical pathway that requires ATP as an energy source. To your dismay, the reactions soon stop, partly because the ATP is rapidly used up and partly because an excess of ADP builds up and inhibits the enzymes involved. You are about to give up when the following table from a biochemistry textbook catches your eye. Hydrolysis reaction creatine ATP enzyme A creatine phosphate + ADP 3 kcal/mole enzyme B ATP + H20 ADP + phosphate -7.3 kcal/mole enzyme D pyrophosphate + H20 2 phosphate -7 kcal/mole enzyme E glucose 6-phosphate +H20 glucose+phosphate -3.3 kcal/mole Which of the following reagents is the best choice to revitalize your reaction? a) A vast excess of ATP b) Glucose 6-phosphate and enzyme E c) Creatine phosphate and enzyme A d) Pyrophosphate e) Pyrophosphate and enzyme D 14) The enzymes that catalyze the synthesis of macromolecules do not also catalyze their breakdown by hydrolysis because a) Enzymes can catalyze reactions in only one direction. b) Hydrolysis is not an energetically favorable reaction. c) The hydrolytic reaction is not the reverse of the reaction pathway that is used for biosynthesis d) Enzymes are destroyed immediately after synthesis is completed. e) Biosynthesis proceeds more rapidly than hydrolysis.

Explanation / Answer

Note: as per guidlines i ve to answer only first question

Answer : A

One of the important factor in enzyme catalysed reaction is the collision, more the collision effective is the reaction. The number of collisions occuring depends on the temperture. At optimum temperature highest collisions occur which result in easily decrease in activation energy. Therefore at 37oc enzymes decrease the activation energy while it cannt do at 4oc
