Question

Two conductors having net charges of 14.8 C and -14.8 C have a potential difference of 4.7 V.

A. Determine the capacitance of the system.

B. Determine the potential difference between the two conductors if the charges on each are increased to 100 C magnitude.

Please explain.

Explanation / Answer

one conductor is having a charge of 14.8uc other is having a charge of -14.8uc in capacitor one plate haves a charge of q uc and other plate has a charge of -q uc and the potential difference across them is given as V then the capacitance of the plates is given as q/V => capacitance of given problem = 14.8/4.7 = 3.149uF A) capacitance is 3.149uF B) even though the charge on each plate is increased by 100uc the relative charge difference between the plates doesn't change as potential difference is given as charge /capacitance as the relative charge remains constant and also the capacitance of the two conductors remains constant => the potential difference remains constant potential difference = 4.7v
