Question
A mystery particle enters the region b/n the plates of a thomson apparatus. The deflection angle is measured to be 0.2 radians(downward)for this particle when V=2000v,l=10.0cmand d=2.0cm(with the top deflector plate more positively charged than the bottom deflector plate). If a perpendiculaar magnitude of 4.57*10^-2Tis applied simultaniusly with the electric field ,the particle passes through the plates with out deflection.(a.)find q/m for thise particle. (b.)identify the particle. (c.)find the horizontal speed with which the particle entered the plates.
Explanation / Answer
These seem complicated, but you only need to know two things... the electric and magnetic fields cancel when qE=qvB, so only a particle with speed v=E/B will pass through undeflected. using this, the problem should be cake for you now. This gives you a direct answer for C.. A is solved to determine the q/m of the particle,(A), and that can be used to determine the particle itself, for B.
