Question

Part 1:

Three equal positive point charges of magnitude Q = 12.00μ C are located at three corners of a square of edge length d = 11.6 cm. A negative charge -36.00μ C is placed on the fourth corner. At the position of the negative charge, what is the magnitude of the electric field due to the three positive charges?

Part 2:

What is the magnitude of the attractive force on the negative charge?
Explanation / Answer
assume a square ABCD, with +charges at ABC & -ve charge at D, let Elecric field due to charges at A,B,C be Ea, Eb, Ec resp.
1) so electric field at D due to +charges at A & C will be
Eac= (Ea2 +Ec2) , now since + charges are equal so Ea=Ec=E ,
where E= q/4or2= 8x106 N/C
so Eac= 11.35x106
now, we have to find out Elecric field at D due to +charge at B, so by solving the formula in red color,put value of r=11.62cm, hence electric field at D due to +charge at B is Eb= 4x106N/C
so resultant Electric field at D = Eac + Eb = 1.535x107 N/C
2) force = 36C x 1.535x107 N/C = 552.6 N
