Question

ok lets say i have the following data in an excel sheet
col A col B
carlos 10
michael 20
maria 25
John 27

i need to come up with a formula that will return the name of the highest number in B
for example in this case it will :
col A col B
The winner is: John

Explanation / Answer

Excel has got certain limitations, It has this function called VLOOKUP which can do this job, but it searches only in the first column of given data. Let us change you give data to col a -> numbers & Col B -> names then enter this command =VLOOKUP( MAX(A1:A4), A1:B4, 2 ,FALSE ) This will make this function look for max value in the 1st column of table A1 to B4 and return the column value from 2 column. False is for do not approximate.
