Question

1. Consider the metal implant shown in the x-ray below:

*** My main question is on C, but if you could look at my answers for a and b, that would be great. I had some doubts

a) List two types of corrosion you would worry about

I said galvonic corrosion and crevice corrosion (such as pitting)

b) Choose one of these types of corrosion and suggest a strategy to reduce it.

I said: Crevice corrosion can be reduced by covering the metal(s) in something that would prevent dissolution such as an intermediary resistive material.

** c) You have had several patients complain about pain and swelling around the implant but the x-ray reveals that the implant is intact. What is the cause of their discomfort?

This is my main question, I was thinking of saying: It could be due to biocompatibility because the presence of metal ions (within the plate and screws) causes potential enhanced foreign body responses, which could lead to inflammation as corrosion or infection occurs. ??

Explanation / Answer

c: inflamation and swelling are due to the release of the prostaglandins from the osseous tissue, there is wound healing as bones are highly vascular . There is callus formation for the OSseous remodeling which is accompanied by neutrophils and mast cells which are the inflammatory cells of the immune system. It is highly likely to be swelling around the tissue of implant. Pain can be regard to the presence of nerve ending around tissue.

A.) The types of corrosion that are
pertinent to the currently used alloys are:
pitting, crevice, galvanic, intergranular,
stress-corrosion cracking, corrosion
fatigue, and fretting corrosion. These
corrosion types will be discussed in
relation to the specific alloys and their
occurrence.

B .well that can only be reducted on the bases of material used. In this case mostly cobalt chromium colybedunum are used. Use of stainless steel could be recommended
