Question

A cake and plate weighing 1.5lb rest at the center of a circular table. Without touching the cake, a boy attempts to remove me cloth (2 ft radius) by quickly pulling the cloth horizontally. If slipping between the plate and the table cloth occurs at all times, determine the longest time the table cloth remains in contact with the plate without having the cake wind up on the floor. The coefficient of friction between the plate and the table cloth is 0.3 and between the cake plate and table surface is 0.4.

Explanation / Answer

the most tricky part is to understand the problem.it must be clear that what is happening..
once the cloth is pulled with some force,this force must be balanced with the frictional force acting on the plate,this will result in no net movement of the cup.
which implies....

distance travelled(s)=2ft* 0.3048m = 0.61m

acceleration =mg/m=g=0.3*9.8 m/s^2=2.94m/s^2

distance travelled=2 ft

applying 2nd law of motion s=ut+0.5at^2 ....where u=0

t=(s/0.5a)=0.644........ans
