A population of 150 octopus takes an average time of 458 days to reach maturity. We select 20 octopuses that reached maturity earliest: their average time to adulthood is 365 days. We breed those 20 early-adult octopuses with each other and monitor the resulting offspring. We watch to see when they mature; the average time to maturity is 405 days 12. Calculate the selection differential. (3 pts.) 13. Calculate the response to selection. (3 pts.) 14. Calculate heritability (h'). (3 pts.) 15. Hi,
The selection differential is the difference between the average character in the population and that of select groups.
S. differential = 458 – 365 = 93.
Response to selection is the difference between the average of population and that of F1 population.
Response = 458 – 405 = 53
Heritability = Response / differential = 53 / 93 = 0.56
