Question
Practical Applications Suppose an electric fence generates a 24 V pulse that lasts from t = 2 sec to 2.1 sec during a 30 second period (each period starts at t = 0). Suppose a person touches the fence at t = 2 sec. The resistance of the person is 10kOhms. Suppose a person only feels a shock if the current flowing through his or her body is 1mA or greater. The electric fence is set up so that any current greater than 50mA will trip the breaker and the fence will no longer work. How much current does the person experience in this situation? Does the person feel a shock? Approximately how many weeds of 50k Ohm resistance each have to grow tall enough to touch the fence before the person no longer feels a shock?Explanation / Answer
a.) the current through the person is= 24/10k=2.4 mA b.) yes the person feels the shock cuz the current is greater than 1mA c.) current through each weed= 24/50k= 0.48 mA is the total current exceeds 50mA , the breaker will trip and then person wont feel any shock. if 49mA flows through weed and just less then 1mA from the person then he won't feel any shock. so number of weeds needed to grow tall enough= 49/0.48=102.08=103(to be safe)
