Question

find the equivalent norton and thevenin circuit wrt terminals a and b:

i can use KVL, KCL, reducing to equivalent resistance using series and parallel formulas, current divider, source transformation and of course ohm's law for other tools if needed for more simplification. i haven't gotten to nodal analysis yet

Explanation / Answer

to find thevenin resitance: Short the voltage source, open the current source Rab= 4 Ohm, (All the other resistances are open) To find the thevenin voltage, measure the voltage across a,b: Let current through 4 Ohm = i then 12-4i= 5*(i-0.5) => i= 14.5/9=1.61A => voltage across 6 Ohm= 6*0.5 =3V So, a,b can be replaced a voltage source of 3V, and resistance of 6 Ohm in series.. b)The norton equivalent is given by a current source o 3/6= 0.5A and a resistance of 6 Ohm in parallel with it..
