Question

Power grid is a very complex network of cower transmission lines that connects different regions together. This interconnection allows more reliable power delivery and more efficient use of energy. The following figure simulates a transmission line connection two regions: A and B. Voltage on both ends of the transmission lines are Which way does the real power flow (A rightarrow B or B rightarrow A) and how much power is absorbed by the receiving end? Which way does the VAR flow and how much VAR is absorbed by the receiving end?

Explanation / Answer

inductive reactance = jwL = j10

direction of current indicates the flow of power

Va(t) = 120 V ; Vb(t) = 1010 V

assuming current flow from A to B

=> i = (Va - Vb) / (1 +j10) = 0.275-123 =>( angle is more than -90 => current is in opposite direction)

hence the power flow is from B to A

cmplx power absorbed at A = (Va)(- I*) = 1.797 - j2.767

power absorbed by the receiving end = 1.797 W

VAR flows from A to B

cmplx power absorbed at B = (Vb)(-I*) = 1.875 -j2.011

VAR absorbed at B= 2.011VAR
