Question

A. IS THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY FOR BENDING THE SAME AS FOR COMPRESSION OR TENSION PARALLEL TO THE GRAIN? EXPLAIN

B. ARE VALUES FOR SHORT, CLEAR BEAM APPLICABLE TO BEAMS OF LARGE SIZE? EXPLAIN

C.SINCE THE MODULUS OF RUPTURE IS CALCULATED USING THE USUAL FLEXURE FORMULA FOR STRESS (F=Mc/I) WHY CAN'T BE CALLED THE BREAKING STRESS?

D.EXPLAIN BRIEFLY WHY THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF WOOD LOADED "PARALLEL" TO ITS GRAIN IS HIGHER THAN THE COMPRESSIVE STREGTH OF THE SAME WOOD LOADED "PERPENDICULAR" TO THE GRAIN? (NOTE : THE DRESCRIPTION PERPENDICULAR TO THE GRAIN DOES NOT MEAN FLEXURE!)

Explanation / Answer

A. The Modulus of elasticity will be the same for a particular direction (parallel to the grain) in compression as well as tension , as wood is anisotropic the material properties will be different in different directions.
B. No they are not applicable to large size as there are other criteria to check the serviceabilty and structural requirement for larger beams.
C. Because Modulus of rupture is the maximum flexural load a wood can take withing the elastic limit, but breaking stress occures beyond the elastic limit.
d. Its because the  Wood is a natural polymer
