Question

The answers are given, I just need the steps.

Bodies of identical shape are shown in 3 positions below. Determine the vertical force the water exerts on the bodies A, B and C. If the specific gravity of the body is 0.7 in Position (A), determine the force exerted on the bottom of the container by Body A.(c) If a horizontal force is applied as shown, determine the minimum magnitude of the force required to produce counter clockwise rotation. Answers (a) 4470 lb down, 10,920 lb up, 10,920 lb up (b) 12,1001b (c) F= 3810 1b

Explanation / Answer

a) basic facts -- hydrostatic force normally acts on the surface !!

1) A the bottom portion of the block that is touching the ground is not exposed to water so no hydrostatic force will act on this

net force = rho *g *h *A1 - rho*g*h*A2

A1= (4+3)*4.5 h be the depth ( assusming depth to be h =6 )

A2= 3*4.5 (h +2.7)

net force = rho *g *6 *(4+3)*4.5 - rho*g*(6+2.7)*3 ..(1) (values of these constants ?? )

B and C ever portion of the body is exposed to water

net force = rho *g *V

where V is volume of the body .. ( i think volume you can calculate)

b) if specific gravity of body is .7

mass= V*.7

force exterted = mass of the body + hydrostatic pressure

= V*.7*g+ (rho *g *6 *(4+3)*4.5 - rho*g*(6+2.7)*3 ) from eq (1)
