Question
A hot air balloon decends toward the ground with a velocity of (1.6 m/s). A champagne bottle is opened to celebrate takeoff, expelling the cork horizontally with a velocity of (4.8 m/s) relative to the balloon. When opened, the bottle is 5.8 m above the ground. (Neglect air resistance.) (a) What is the initial velocity of the cork, as seen by an observer on the ground? in the x and y direction (b) What is the speed of the cork, and its initial direction of motion, as seen by the same observer? (c) Determine the maximum height above the ground attained by the cork. (d) How long does the cork remain in the air?Explanation / Answer
well in such kind of cases there is acceleration of gravity on the ballon but which is canceled out by air resistance so net acceleration is 0 on the ballon
a)the velocity in x direction is 4.8 m /s and in y direction is 1.6 m/s
b)speed = 4.82+1.62 = 5.05m/s
c)the cork will take of the ballon at the start point so the height point is at height of starting point = 5.8 m
d)s=5.8=1.6t+5t2 so t= .9 seconds
