Question

Perform a hypertension evaluation. This evaluation is to be done only if medically approved. The purpose of this learning experience is to understand the bodies' basic response to exercise. Take a resting blood pressure. After taking the blood pressure take your blood pressure while doing moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise. On another occasion take your blood pressure after doing mild- moderate arm curls, also mild-moderate bench press, then take your blood pressure after doing mild to moderate leg extension and leg press Explain what happened and why the reading might have been different. See what happens when you hold your breath. Consider what influence supine has over seated bench press, or seated leg press vs inverted leg press. After doing this self evaluation design a comprehensive exercise program for a hypertensive 50 year old male with a resting BP of 145/92 Explain why every exercise is included

Explanation / Answer

Exercise has many benefits. The effect of exercise on blood pressure is beneficial. Exercise causes spike in the blood pressure, but the heart muscles gain strength with exercise. The blood vessels dilate while exercising, also the heart rate increases. This results in increased blood supply to the body parts as well as to the heart muscles. The increased blood supply means increased nutrition and thus increased strength.

The hypertensive individual already has a high blood pressure, high intensity aerobic or cardiovascular exercise will spike the blood pressure further, thus, that is not a good option to start with. The mild- moderate arm curls, mild-moderate bench press and mild-moderate leg extension and leg press exercises have considerable effect on blood pressure.

The resistance training exercise such as bench press or leg press and leg extensions cause temporary increase in blood pressure. Considering the hypertensive condition of an individual, all these exercises must be included. Initially, to begin with, mild exercise pattern with single leg/arm exercises and then progressing towards moderate exercise such as chest press using both legs and arms can be incorporated.

Thus, every exercise must be included in the comprehensive program for the hypertensive individual.
