Question

9.

Two blocks, a 3kg mass and a 1kg mass, are situated on a level table are attached by a rope. To the
right of the right mass another rope is attached. To this rope is applied a constant tension force, FT.
The blocks are moving to the right at a constant speed of 2 m/s.

a)What is the net force on each block? How do you know this?

b) From the above given information only, what tells you that there must be a friction force on the
blocks? In what direction is that friction force? (Assume the coefficient of friction is the same for the
two blocks.)

Explanation / Answer

a) Since speed is constant of both the blocks, acceleration of both the blocks is zero. Hence net force = 0.

b) Since there is an applied force, the must be an equal and opposite Friction force to nullify it so that there is zero "net" force.

c) Friciton force is opposite to applied force.
