Question

Why is the following situation impossible?A uniform beam of mass mb 53.00 kg and length , 51.00 m supports blocks with masses m155.00 kg and m2515.0 kg at two positions as shown in Figure P12.2. The beam rests on two triangular blocks, with point Pa distance d 50.300 m to the right of the center of gravity of the beam. The position of the object of mass m2 is adjusted along the length of the beam until the normal force on the beam at Ois zero

Explanation / Answer

OP = 0.5 + 0.3 = 0.8m Weight of beam to left of P = 8/10 * 3 = 2.4 Kg...and it will act through a point at 0.4 m from p... Weight of beam to tight of P = 0.5 kg...and will act through a point at 0.1 m from P toward right... Let us assume the normal reaction at O is zero...so for the system to be in equilibrium...the moment about P must be 0.... 15 * x +0.6*0.1 = 5*0.8 + 2.4 * 0.4... From here we get, x = 0.32 m....But maximum value of X can be 0.2 m...Hence it is contradictory...so the case is impossible...
