Question

Procedure: You will be making slides of living plant cells from the aquatic plant Elodea. As with the nimal cells abo observing any changes that occur in the cell. ve you will be changing the ionic concentrations of the extracellular space and 1. Take 1 leaf from an Elodea sprig and place it flat on a microscope slide. Add a drop of tap water and cover it with a coverslip Focus on the plant cells eventually working up to the 40X objective. You do not need to stain these plant cells to observe them with a light microscope. Why? What do the cells look like? Can you see any organelles? If so, what do you think they are? Draw at least 5 of these 2. -plant cells in your lab notebook and make sure to recorsthe, magnification. Follow the procedure as written above in step 6 using a Kimwipe as a wick. First expose the cells to5% NaCl and then deionized water. what do you predict will happen to the cells under these various ionic conditions?Draw the cells in your notebook allowing at least(5 minütes in the new environment before making your final observations. 3. ) 4. What do you think would happen if you were to change the extracellular space to deionized waterbefore the cells had been exposed to 5% NaCl? Try it and record your observationsby sketching the cells in your notebook. Make sure to throw your slides and coverslips in the glass disposal box at the front of the room. Put away your microscopes and make sure your lab bench is clean. 5. tap iso 0

Explanation / Answer

If the Elodea is placed in the NaCl solution, the vacuoles disappears and the protoplasm takes off from the call wall creating the organelles materialize to be clumped in the middle of the cell. This types of cell are called plasmolysed cells. The reason behind this is the water potentiality inside the cells is higher than the salt solution. As a result water comes away from the cells into the salt solution. From NaCl solution the Elodea cells are placed in deionized water where if the permanent damage is made, the organelles will remain in the center of the cells. If there is no permanent damage occur, water will enter again into the cells, the vacuoles will come back to previous form and the organelles will re-enter to the periphery of the cells.
