Question

Tarzan, who weighs 621 N, swings from a cliff at the end of a convenient vine that is 14 m long (see the figure). From the top of the cliff to the bottom of the swing, he descends by 2.3 m. The vine will break if the force on it exceeds 1030 N. What would the greatest force on the vine be during the swing?

Explanation / Answer

conservation of energy Ei = Ef m gh = 1/2 m v^2 m v^2 = 2 m gh = 2*621*2.3=2856.6 now at the bottom of the swing will have the largest T since it has to oppose all the weight T - mg = mv^2/r T = mg + mv^2/r = 621+ 2856.6/14=825.04 so it wont break
