Question

The blocks shown are separated by a solid strut attached to the blocks with frictionless pins. The coefficient of static friction for all surfaces is 0.325. Determine the value of the horizontal force P that will cause motion to impend to the right. Neglect the weight of the strut.

I've posted this a couple times and keep getting different answers from people trying to help. So I've attached my work to this problem. Please review it and "show me" what I'm doing wrong.

I'm sure I've made a mistake somewhere, but I need help finding it.

Explanation / Answer

50 lb = 22.679 kg

36 lb = 16.329 kg

Maximum frictional force on 36 lb;

f(36 lb) = 0.325*16.329*9.8*cos(40)

= 39.84 N

Maximum downward force :

D = 16.329*9.8*sin(40)

= 102.862 N

Downward Force =  102.862- 39.84 = 63.022 N

F(strauss) = 63.022*cos(20) = 59.22 N

Normal force on 50 lb:

N = 22.679*9.8+59.22*sin(20) = 242.51 N

Maximum Force :

P = 59.22*cos(20)+ 242.51*0.325

= 134.464 N OR 30.229 lbs
