Please consider and explain how each different level of the environment described in ecological systems theory may affect the development of an individual, and the people closest to them (eg. family members), when they are experiencing ONE of those "hot topics."such as the effects of divorce, child abuse and neglect, quality of child care quality of elder care. the obesity epidemic public policies for children or senior citizens, or sex education programs in schools. Please select ONE of these toplcs, or provide one that you prefer, and use a hypothetical example of your own to consider how each different level of the environment as described in ecologicall systems theory may affect the development of an individual, and the people closest to them te-g. family members). Explanation / Answer

Ecological Systems Theory , also known as Human Ecology Theory or Development in Context , identifies 5 environmental systems with which a person interacts. They are --

Microsystem : This includes the institutions or groups that most directly involve an individuals development, like family, peer group, school, neighbourhood etc.

Mesosystem : This includes the interactions among the different components of microsystem, like family and teachers; family and child's peer group etc.

Exosystem : This can be a social setting in which the individual is not directly involved but is affected by the change in behaviour pattern of the other members, frequent conflicts between parents might affect a child's sociological behaviour and psychology.

Macrosystem : This describes the effect of the culture in which an individual lives. It might include ethnicity, religious identity, economic status, a common heritage etc. However, macrosystem is not static and evolves over time as the successive generations might bring some changes in the macrosystem.

Chronosystem : This includes  the changes in a person's life due to the occurance of certain events like death of a parent or a loved one, divorce or a fatal illness etc shape the future course of an individual's life to a great degree.

EXAMPLE :

Agnes was a healthy and happy child -- playfull, talkative and full of energy. She had caring parents and a cosy life at home. They were a close-knit family and since she was an only child, she was used to all the attention and love of her parents. But, this had not made her selfish. Rather, she was generous and helpful and quite popular among her peer group-- in short, a happy, contented child .

She was barely twelve years old when the world changed for her. One fine morning, while she was in school, her grandfather came to pick her up in the middle of her class. Poor Agnes had no idea that her world had crashed. She was given the shocking news that her mom had just met with a fatal car accident and the doctors could not save her. Agnes did NOT cry ! She went dumb; did not show any form of reaction.

The little happy girl had changed. In the beginning , she did not want to go to school. She did not go out to play and would not leave the side of her father even for a short while. Her grandma wanted to take her with her ,hoping that a change of place would do some good to the child. But , as expected, Agnes refused.[Microsystem]

Agnes' family was concerned and so were her teachers. Her class teacher decided to visit her home and talk to the child. After a couple of visits by the teacher, Agnes agreed to come to school and resume her studies. Her class-mates had decorated the classroom with balloons and ribbons to welcome her back. When Agnes came, everyone did everything to make her feel happy and cheerful. But nobody spoke about her mother. Their teacher had instructed them to not raise the topic of her mother's death but wait for her to open up.

In one class assignment, the teacher told her students to write an esay on 'My Family'.

That day Agnes cried in class-- the first time after her mother's death.....

And perhaps that was the day when Agnes really began her comeback journey. [Mesosystem]

Just when Agnes's life was attaining some form of normalcy, she got another shock. It was hardly six months since her mother's death when ,one day, after Agnes returned from school, her father introduced her to a woman and informed Agnes that he would be marrying her within a month.

Agnes ran to her room, locked the door from inside and did not come out till the next morning-- when it was time to go to school. She did not talk to her father for a couple of days. Perhaps, the way her father had broken the news to her was not correct.

Slowly, after a lot of councelling by her teacher and emotional support from her close friends, Agnes accepted the fact that her father was remarrying and she would get a 'new' mom--- a step-mom !

After the marriage, as was expected, Agnes's father spent most of the time with his new wife. Agnes felt excluded. Not that her dad or her step-mother did anything to hurt her but Agnes did not like her mother's bedroom or any of her things being used by the other woman. [Exosystem]

Agnes now began to spend most of her time away from home. She went for frequent sleepovers to her best friend's home. In short, she began to distance herself from her father. Luckily for her, she had an excellent teacher and loving friends who gave her all the emotional support that she needed at this time.

They let her be and waited for her to come to terms with the shape her life had taken.[ Macrosystem]

Then her baby brother was born. Agnes, who had always been a loving and generous child began doting on her baby brother. Her life had changed again-- this time with happiness. Agnes showered all her pent up love and emotions on the baby and now the old Agnes was back. [Chronosystem]
