Question
One application of an RL circuit is the generation of high voltage from a low voltage source. In the figure shown, assume that the switch has been at position 1 for a long time. Now, the switch is thrown quickly from position 1 to position 2. Compute the initial voltage across R1. In the figure, V = 24 V, L = 5 H, R1 = 16 00 , and R2 = 10 . (Answer in Volts.)
One application of an RL circuit is the generation of high voltage from a low voltage source. In the figure shown, assume that the switch has been at position 1 for a long time. Now, the switch is thrown quickly from position 1 to position 2. Compute the initial voltage across R1. In the figure, ?V = 24 V, L = 5 H, R1 = 16 00 ?, and R2 = 10 ?. (Answer in Volts.)Explanation / Answer
Given
Voltage V = 24 V
Resistance of the resistor R1 = 1600
R 2 = 10
I = V / ( R 2 )
= 24 V / ( 10 )
= 2.4 A
Here the resistors are connected in series combination
Since the resistors are in series combination , current passing through each resistor is same
Initial Voltage across R 1 is
V 1 = I R 1
= ( 2.4 A ) ( 1600 )
= 3840 V
or
= ( 3840 V ) ( 10-3 kV / V )
= 3.840 kV
