Question

The acceleration due to gravity becomes weaker by about three parts in ten million for each meter of increased elevation above the Earth's surface. Suppose a skyscraper is 100 stories tall, with the same floor plan for each story and with uniform average density. Compare the location of the building's center of mass and the location of its center of gravity.

a) Its center of mass is higher by a distance of several millimeters.

b) Its center of mass is higher by a distance of several meters.

c) Its center of mass and its center of gravity are in the same location.

Explanation / Answer

The mass is equally distributed so the center of mass is in the middle of the building. gravity is slightly stronger at the lower end of the building so the center of gravity will be shifted down the building, so c is wrong. Just from scale b is obviously wrong. So a is the answer.
