Ans A) There is lot of difference between phospholipids and triglycerides in our body and the functions for both are also different. The phospholipids have multiple roles to play in our body and one of the major roles is by forming semi-permeable barrier of the cell membrane and intra-cellular organelles. The triglyceride consists of three fatty acids that are attached to the glycerol backbone but in case of phospholipids, it comes with two fatty acids along with a phosphate group which changes the structure and function.

Functions of Phospholipids

The phospholipids play an important role in maintaining the structure of the overall membrane. It helps the cell membrane in maintaining a semi-permeability and hence does not let molecules or ions to pass through freely. It acts as a barrier to keep the inside and outside of the cell separate.

It plays a very strong role in maintaining signal transduction process. There are many molecules and ions which move in and outside the cell with help of phospholipids.

On making a comparison between the structures the phospholipids have two fatty molecules with a phosphate group attached to it which helps in efficient signal transduction. When it comes to triglycerides, it has three fatty acids. The phospholipids do not function as dietary requirement where the vacant glycerol is attached to phosphate group making it hydrophilic. This makes it amphipathic molecules and hence the structure enables it to dissolve in both fat and water. The fatty acid chain is able to attach to fat soluble substance and the polar phosphate group is able to attach to water soluble molecules making the signal transduction easy. Phospholipid due to its structure also acts as emulsifier and helps in transportation of many molecules.
