Question

A system comprised of three independent components. The probability of failure
for each component is given.
------A1-----
----- -----A3-----
------A2-----
A1 = .1
A2 = .2
A3 = .3
Use our standard Notation: A1, A2, A3, A = (system operates properly)

a) Find the probability that the system operates properly.
b) Find the probability that the system operates properly and exactly two
of the components work.
c) Find the probability that the system operates properly if exactly two of
the components work.

Explanation / Answer

a) From fig... Its not clear... but I am assuming they are in parellel ==> probability that the system operates properly = 1-P(all fail) = 1-(.1*.2*.3) = 0.994 b) 1- (.1*.2*.3) - (.1*.8*.7 + .9*.2*.7 + .9*.8*.3) = 0.596 c) If to operate properly... the probability of system functioning properly = 1
