Question
A family run farm close to a river. Due to global warming, challenges in obtaining seasonal labour, increasing regulations from the regional council around nitrogen pollution in rivers, the family has decided to look at new digital technology and they have asked your company to make recommendations of how digital technology can assist. For each of the problems below, identify a solution that may assist using one or a combination of digital technologies. Limit your answers for each problem to a short paragraph (less than 100 words) and a sketch to clearly show your proposed solution:
Problem 1 - Grass growth: A lot of grass is needed to feed dairy cows. Grass growth is a factor or soil temperature, fertilizer, water & sunlight. As a sustainable farmer I don’t want to apply too much fertilizer, so how can I use technology to predict the grass growth?
Problem 2 - Traceability: Customers are increasing wanting traceability of their food. How could this be achieved without requiring a central company / database controlling the market?
Problem 3 - Animal monitoring: Traditionally, everyday farm workers are employed to go through the paddocks and monitor the animals for potential health issues and check the water troughs are working. This year they have not been able to hire anyone and there’s too much work for themselves. How could technology assist to augment their work or automate the monitoring?
Problem 4 - Stock feed predictions: The family would like to predict how much stock feed to purchase this year before it gets expensive but don’t want to pay over the odds. I’ve paid for a weather prediction for the year, but want to know what technology I could utilize to look at historical weather data combined with stock price to identify when and how much to purchase.
Explanation / Answer
Answer 1:-
Two grass growth models are available:
1. Jouven et al. (2006) (J Model):
2. Brereton et al. (1996) (B Model):
Inputs to the models is meteorological data, hence we can get the predicted grass growth with the help of these two models.
Answer 2:
The family has to do registration to the ISO 9001 Quality Standards. These require that the product should be able to be traced from the current stage back through all its stages of manufacture through accurate and timely record-keeping.
When registration mark will be done and there products will be ISO 9001 quality standards checked customers will feel assured about quality of there food products.
Answer 3:-
In following ways we can use technology to assist us in farm and also monitor the health of animals:
1.Sensor is a device that measures a physiological or behavioral parameter (related to the health or estrus) of an individual cow and enables automated, on farm detection of changes in this condition that is related to a health event (such as disease ) and requires action on the part of the farmer(such as treatment).
2. Automatic gate timers:
The daily task of fetching cows for milking and opening gates to new paddocks can be a repetitive and mundane task. Automatic gate timers can help in opening of gates.
3. Cow identification:
Individual cow identification is the tool that enables tracking of dairy cows and their associated herd and performance records.
Answer 4:-
Historical weather:-
Geographic information system(GIS) can be used to find the spatial data but for exact and precise certified weather data for use in litigation is available only through the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Ordering instructions are located online at: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/about/ncdcordering.html#CERTIFICATION or by phone at (828) 271-4800.
Stock Price:
1. TACTICAL MOMENTUM algorithms are the best at predicting stock prices.
2. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) model can be used to predict stock prices
