Question
hello,
I need some help in my report. I'm doing it on Geogrid vs soil and i have to determine which one is better after doing a little research i found what Geogrid is and determined that it was better then the rest. To make my report better i would like to know when use Geogrid and where to us it? Under this i will copy my report that way some can help me. If you guys have a link where i could read about this and it could help me answer this questions please tell me and thank you.
My report:
Geogrid versus Subgrade treatment
There has been lots of discussion of what type of treatment to use for a road. Many say that Geogrid is better and others say that subgrade treatment is the best. There has not been solid information and testing results about which one is the best quality. After reading and doing some research the best treatment to use for roads, reinforcement and walls is the Geogrid.
The Geogrid is a fiber type of material that is categorized as geosynthetic materials that is used for reinforcing material. This is the latest development in the geotechnical industry. This type of synthetics could be used as soil reinforcement, retaining walls, dams and in bigger structures and in places where the soil is unsuitable and it will be costly to replace the entire soil. Many construction industries use this material because it is good in tension and has a higher ability to distribute load across a large area. Not only is it a good material on that but the geotextiles is definitely better than the soil treatment. The reason why it’s better is because the traditional practice of replacing the soil from a site if the soil is unfit can be eliminated, this material enhances the properties of the soil like tension, compression and shear. Some of the characteristics about the Geogrid is that it’s more flexible in nature. The Geogrid has higher adapting ability when the deformation of the foundation happens unlike the other traditional construction treatments which are stiffer. They are also earthquake resistant and more economical compared to the traditional method. The Geogrid helps reduce the shrinkage and expansion of soil due to temperature, it also helps to prevent water from entering into the soil and losing its strength. There are different slopes with different angles that need to be taken under consideration due to the fact that there is different Geosynthetic Materials. According to the ASTM a fine Geosynthetic Material is a planar product manufacture from a polymeric material used with soil, rock, earth, or other geotechnical-related material as an integral part of a civil engineering project, structure, or system. Geogrids can withstand heavy tension loads without much deformation and have low strain and are primarily used for soil reinforcement.
The subgrade is the soil that is underlying the pavement layers. This is the weakest layer among all and will have the least CBR value, some of the soils are very strong and don’t require any treatment, but there are a few clayey soils that require treatment. This soil is very weak and certainly does require stabilization this is done by cement or using lime, most of them prefer cement, the procedure of stabilizing the cement is the grids are marked for the area for which the cement has to be spread and the rate of passing cement is in one bag per grid and after that they are compacted using a roller. Compacting the soil with a roller is very useful for loose soils, this type of compaction has been used for several years. Compacting the soil with a roller only stabilizes the soil but it does not increase the properties of the soil like tension, compression, and shear, this method is used primarily for buildings and bridges and for small areas where geosynthetics are not a good option to be used.
Explanation / Answer
When and where to use geogrid:
Based on the manufacturing process geogrid is classified under three categories :
And based on which direction the stretching is done it's classified into two groups :
The above types geogrids are applied to many constructions which are underwritten :
IN FOUNDATION SOIL: Geogrids can be help to stabilize the soil below the foundation mainly in shallow foundation.
IN PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION: Geogrids are used in pavement constructions to inprove the subgrade quality by removing the problem of soft subgrade. Besides this it also acts as a reinforcement in pavement base.
IN CONSTRUCTION IN RETAINING WALL: The usage of geogrids in retaining wall construction is in the area of soil backfills which is holding the soil together. It will help in a stable retaining wall construction by increasing the soil structural integrity. The geogrids solve the problems with soft backfill or sloping ground.
From the above we can say that geogrid is advantageous to use since it also provide ease in construction and optimization of land use.
