Question

Romeo and Mercutio are running in a race. Romeo runs at a constant velocity of 3 meters/second. Mercutio comes from behind and passes him, running at a constant velocity of S meters/second. They continue at these constant velocities for the next several seconds. Call the moment that Mercutio passes Romeo t 0. In other words, at t between Mercutio and Romeo is 0 meters. 0 the displacement Call the direction the racers are running e towards the inis line the positive direction. a) How far ahead is Mercutio at t 1 second? b) How far ahead is Mercutio at t 2 seconds? c) How far ahead was Mercutio at t-1 seconds? d) How fast is the gap between Mercutio and Romeo increasing? n other words, at what velocity is Mercuito going from Romeo's point of view? f What is Romeo's velocity relative to Mercutio? g) What is Romeo's speed relative to Mercutio?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Velociity of mercution (Vm) = 5 m/s
Velocity of romeo (Vr) = 3 m/s
since they are moving in the same direction therfore the relative velocity will be
VR = Vm - Vr = 5-3 = 2 m/s
Distance between (at t= 1) = VR*t = 2*1 = 2m
Hence Mercutio will be 2m ahead of romeo.
(b) Distance covered at t= 2 s
= VR*2 = 2*2 = 4m
Hence mercutio will be 4 m ahead of romeo.
(c) at t = -1 second
Distance = VR*(-1) =2*(-1) =-2 m
At t= - 1 s , romeo will be 2 m ahead of mercutio
(d) Since the relative velocity is 2m/s therefor the gap between them is increasing at the rate of 2m/s.
(e) Relative velocity(VR) = 2 m/s
(f) romeo relative velocity with respect to mercution = -2 m/s
(g) Speed has only magnitude therefore it will be 2m/s
