Question

020 (part 2 of 3) 10.0 points ow long after lift-off does the rocket reach s maximum height? Answer in units of s. 021 (part 3 of 3) 10.0 points How long is the rocket in the air? Answer in units of s 022 10.0 points An object is thrown downward with an initial speed of 5 m/s from a height of 41 m above the ground. At the same instant, a second object is propelled vertically up from ground level with a speed of 23 m/s. At what height above the ground will thew two objects pass each other? The acceleration i of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 Answer in units of m. sa 9. 023 10.0 points A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 26 m/s. Then, 1.9 s later, a stone is thrown straight up (from the same initial height as the ball) with an initial speed

Explanation / Answer

Problem 22)

Let the first and second object are pass each other at x distance from the ground level

Using relation,

x = ut - 0.5 gt^2

x = 23 t - (0.5)(9.8)t^2 ...... (1)

downward:

h-x = 5 t+ (0.5)(9.8)t^2

41 - x = 5 t + (0.5)(9.8)t^2 ...... (2)

adding 1 and 2 equations, we get

time t = 1.46 sec

substitute these value in eq (1), we get

x = (23)(1.46) - (1/2)(9.8)(1.46)^2

x = 23.17 m
