Question
in my physics 202 class we have a test coming up and for the study guide our professor told us that one of our questions would have this information.
There is a light bulb
the light bulbs resitivity is given
the lightbulb connected to a voltage source for 1 hour and the voltage is given from this source
how much current is run through the bulb
how much power is sent through the bulb
and how much energy is consumed by the bulb.
can you provide an example or some way of solving this please and thank you for any help. you can fill in numbers where i said the information will be provided by the professor im just trying to figure out how to solve a problem like these.
if it helps the chapters this test covers is chapters 16-19 from the seventh edition physics book by douglas c giancoli
Explanation / Answer
Given
V = 200V
R = 10 ohms
t = 1hr
Formulae
V = IR ... ohm's law
P = VI .. power
W = P x t ... work or energy
Solution
I = V/R = 200/10 = 20A
P = VI = 200 x 20 = 4000 watts or 4 kW
W = Pt = 4 kWx 1hr = 4kWhr
** Sometimes they ask the energy in joules. To do so, convert as
1kWhr = 3600000 J
