Explanation / Answer

The following article talks about the role Homologous recombination plays in DNA repair and DNA damage tolerance.

The process has various pathways with play together to repair of DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) and interstrand crosslinks. It also support  DNA replication in case of damaged replication forks which increases the tolerance of DNA damage. The paper focuses on the fact that failure to repair DNA damage is precursor to development of cancer, therefore the process of homologous recombination plays a key role in preventing onset of cancer.

For example, mutations in BRCA2 can cause breast and ovarian cancer as well as Fanconi anemia, the genesis of which is attributed to defect in the repair of DNA interstrand crosslinks

The paper also talks about how homologous chromosome acts as a core mechanism of Rad51 filament formation and DNA strand invasion. Homologous chromosome helps DNA replication which in turn recognises the damage in the DNA, checking the entire genome , base by base, and also helps transcription.
