Question
1.) Charge of uniform density (3.54 nC/m3) is distributed throughout a hollow cylindrical region formed by two coaxial cylindrical surfaces of radii 1.0 cm and 3.0 cm. Determine the magnitude of the electric field at a point which is 8.0 cm from the symmetry axis.
2.) Two infinite parallel surfaces on xy plane carry uniform charge densities of 0.2 nC/m2 at z = +1 cm and 0.6 nC/m2 at z = -1 cm. What is the magnitude and direction of the electric field at z = 0, which is in between two surfaces?
Please answer both questions. Thank you.
Explanation / Answer
1] Effective Linear charge density lambda = rho*area of cross section
= 3.54e-9*pi*[0.03^2 - 0.01^2]
= 8.897e-12
Electric field E = 2k lambda/r = 2*9e9*8.897e-12/0.08
= 2 N/C
2] Electric field E = summation sigma/2e0
= 0.6e-9/[2*8.85e-12] - 0.2e-9/[2*8.85e-12]
= 22.6 N/C
direction : towards z axis.
