Question
In Jules Verne's novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo and his (a) If 1.00 league equals 3.500 km, find the depth in meters to which the crew traveled if they actually went 2.000 x 10* leagues below the ocean surface. 7.107 Your answer cannot be understood or graded. More Information m (b) Find the difference between your answer to part (a) and the radius of the Earth, 6.38 x 106 m. (incidentally, author Jules Verne meant that the total distance traveled, and not the depth, was 20,000 leagues.) 63.62(10*6) X Your answer cannot be understood or graded. More Information m Need Help?ResdExplanation / Answer
(a) 1 league = 3.500 km = 3.500 x 1000 m = 3500 m
Distance travelled by the crew = 2.000 x 10^4 leagues
Covert this distance in meters.
So, the distance travelled by the crew = 2.000 x 10^4 x 3500 m = 7.0 x 10^7 meter.
(b) Radius of the earth = 6.38 x 10^6 meter
So the difference between the distance travelled and radius of earth = 7.0 x 10^7 - 6.38 x 10^6
= 70.0 x 10^6 - 6.38 x 10^6 = 63.62 x 10^6 m
= 6.36 x 10^7 m.
The answers are the same as you have calculated. I think you have forgot to put the units in the answer. Please put the units after the result asnd then check. Please let me know whether this solves your problem or not.
