Question
Exploration & Expectations with a health-related Scientific Question: In the ideal gas human arm model, you will explore how the ideal gas equation can be used to predict how the pressure inside the arm circulatory system changes as the heart “pushes” on the system. You will create your own heartbeat in a fake human arm with internal tubing, where one end of the tubing is connected to a syringe whose volume control and the other end of the tubing is connected to the PASCO pressure sensor. You will also have a human blood pressure sensor, where you can measure your own blood pressure and see if you can model it using your ideal-gas human arm model. When your blood pressure is taken at the doctor’s office and the reading states that your circulatory system pressure is 70 (min) and 100 (max) mmHg, is this pressure absolute pressure or a gauge pressure? Justify your reasoning.
Explanation / Answer
Before applying the logic,we will just apply the basics.
It is known that atmospheric pressure is 760mm of Hg.
It clearly means that if our actual blood pressure is between 70-100 mm of Hg,our blood vessels may be crushed due to immense pressure difference. The instrument is so calibrated that it takes atmospheric pressure to be the reference. It means that the reading we see is the gauge pressure.Actual pressure=gauge pressure+atmosphere. And this extra pressure is created by our heart to maintain a balance between the body and atmospheric pressure.
