Question
The following four questions are True/False questions, referring to a photoelectric effect experiment in which electrons are being emitted from the metal plate. The picture below represents the energy levels of the electrons within the metal and may help you answer these questions. Outside metal Inside metal Emitted electrons will have different initial kinetic energies. (T/F) The work function for the metal varies for different electrons at different energy levels in the same atom, since they require different amounts of energy to be ejected. (T/FI The energy of the photons hitting the plate must be equal to (or greater than) the work function of the metal. (T/F) The initial kinetic energy of the ejected electrons is determined by the battery voltage. (T/F)Explanation / Answer
1. it is true. because electrons are at different energy levels, and when photons strikes the surface , energy of the photons divides into two parts. photon energy= workfunction+kinetic energy of emitted electrons. electrons lying deep inside will have greater work function and hence less kinetic energy.
2. this is also true, electron lying deep inside will have greater work function energy.
3. this is false. electrons of photons solely depends on their frequency (f), energy of photons E=hf, where h is planks constant. but electrons to be capable of emitting electrons from metal surface must have energy greater than or equal to work function.
4. no. its false. there is no need of battery.
