Question
Problem 1 This figure shows the position vs. time graph for two objects before and after they collide. Assume that they form an isolated system (a) What are the velocities of the two objects before and after the collision? (Hint: you will get a more accurate result if you choose the initial and final times where the lines go exactly througha point on the grid shown.) (b) Given the result in (a), what is the ratio of the inertias of the two objects? x (mt 3 m O, 2 m- ool 3 s t (s) 1s 1.5 s 2 s 1.75 sExplanation / Answer
Befor as well as after collision both particles are moving with uniform velocities.
velocity=displacement/time.
here motion is along x axis.
So just by carefully obsering values of x and t we get the result.
Before collision
For particle 1 velocity=(2-3)/1.5 m/s = -0.66m/s
For particle 2 velocity=(1.5-0.5)/1.25 m/s=0.8 m/s
After collision
For particle 1 velocity=(3.5-2)/1.25 m/s=1.2 m/s
For particle 2 velocity =(2.5-2)/1 m/s=0.5 m/s
