Question

3) lon Flow (20 pnts): Consider a neuron (at body temperature) with a chloride concentration of 25 mM inside the neuron and 500 mM outside the neuron a) Consider an initial membrane potential of -50mV. Which direction will the chloride ions move if all chloride channels open completely. How will the membrane potential and chloride ion concentrations inside and outside the cell change after channels open? (5 points) b) Consider an initial membrane potential of -100mV. Which direction will the chloride ions move if all chloride channels open completely. How will the membrane potential and chloride ion concentrations inside and outside the cell change after channels open? (5 points)

Explanation / Answer

a) Since, the potential is -50mV, opening of Chloride channels will result in pulling the membrane potential to -70mV, which is the resting potential of the membrane. The potential become more negative, which means, the number of chloride ions carrying the negative charge will move into the call, thereby raising the potential to -70mV.

b) Since, the potential is -100mV, which means more of chloride ions carrying the negative charge are present inside the cell. The opening of Chloride channels will result in pulling the membrane potential to -70mV, which is the resting potential of the membrane. The potential become less negative, which means, the number of chloride ions carrying the negative charge will move out from the the call, thereby decreasing the potential to -70mV, the resting potential.
